To Maximilian Schutz – our brand ambassador from Germany – the real master class of hunting is managing to get close to the game without being noticed. To find out how he achieves this and what it’s like to hunt in the Black Forest woods and fields of Germany, we asked him to share his hunting-related favorites. Here’s what he told us.
I truly enjoy spending time in nature. It gives me a feeling of freedom. I admire the tranquility, and I like to observe the wildlife in their natural habitat.
Type of hunt: I love both stalking and driven hunts. Both types of hunting are exciting for me because they are so unpredictable – you never know what may happen next. Sometimes, you have to go home without the sight of an animal, and there are also times when you experience wonderful things. When you’re stalking, it’s always very thrilling to get close to the game without being noticed. And with driven hunts, it’s different – I have to remain focused and be ready for anything to happen. The moment I hear barking dogs getting closer, my pulse starts to rise up immediately.
I love Black Forest woods, where I can hunt roe deer and wild boar on the local grounds. I do it here with my family – I truly like to share this experience with them. I also travel a lot to hunt in other countries where I get to know other types of hunting and mentalities, but I’m always happy to come back home because this place is the most beautiful for me.
Time of the year: Autumn is the most beautiful season for me. It’s the time when nature changes, and there are many different game species. A yearly highlight for me is the beginning of driven hunts. In winter, I really adore hunting foxes in the snow, especially in the morning when the light shows up and the foxes move around in the fields; it’s an indescribable view.
Animal to hunt: Wild boar. Hunting it in the fields at night is always exciting. Sometimes it doesn’t work, and that just makes it way more joyful. Of course, driven hunts for wild boar are very well known here in Germany. They require a lot of practice, and you need to know how to act in different situations. That’s why I love them so much.
Game to eat: Roe deer meat is the best. All it needs is to sear the back briefly with a little seasoning, and that’s it – the taste is excellent. Actually, it’s so versatile that it tastes good in almost any preparation. Also, I prefer eating meat that I have hunted myself from my own hunting grounds; this makes it special for me.
Gear to use: I always have a knife in my pocket when hunting because there are so many situations when I may need it. You don’t know when it may occur, so it’s better to always have one with you.
Pulsar Helion 2 XP50 Pro is the perfect companion for me on the hunt. Whether it’s a deer during the day or wild boar at night, you always see more with this device. Its size and shape also make it easy to handle. In addition, the image quality is outstanding, and it helps to recognize an animal at long distances. That’s why I always take this device with me when hunting in the fields.
Thing about being a Pulsar ambassador: I get to know Pulsar ambassadors – many new and interesting people from lots of different countries. We all have the same interest – which is hunting, so we can share the news about products and talk about our own experiences with Pulsar equipment.
Spending time outdoors, you learn the most about nature. Here, you can observe and learn from every little mistake you make and try to do better in the future. If the stalking doesn’t work out once, then it will do the next time. Being in nature, you also learn to take advantage of all circumstances: when it rains, the game is less active, but there’s always something new to learn out there.
Challenge when hunting: Approaching the wild animal without it noticing you. Whether you’re with the camera or hunting, being close to the wild is amazing, but if you manage to get close without getting noticed, that’s the real master class.
Medium to get the news about shooting and hunting: Mainly via social media or print media. Most young hunters are active on social media, and it helps to get the news very quickly. But I’m also a fan of magazines. Holding a magazine in your hands and reading it in the evening often gives you way more than being on your mobile phone for a whole day. I especially prefer reading a magazine when hunting.
By spending time outdoors you can observe nature, learn from every little mistake you make, and try to do better in the future.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved nature and spending time outdoors. I don’t come from a hunting family, but it feels as if it was always a part of me. At the age of 16, I took my hunting license with my father – it was our special father-and-son project. From then on, I’m outdoors every day with my rifle and camera, trying to capture everything and share it on Instagram. Hunting is my special retreat where I can get back to nature, leave everyday life behind, and relax.
